PICKUPS + RESHOOTS 🎥

Couch Serf is back to shooting!

Though we wrapped our principal photography back in April, we always plan time to shoot additional photography once we’re deep in the edit and know what else the project needs. A lot of this just comes down to easy pickup shots (i.e. we need a shot of Eli’s hand flicking on a light switch).

The biggest lift we have during our additional photography time is a whole new scene! We’ve decided that [SPOILER] would hit even harder if we set up [SPOILER] earlier in the movie. [SPOILER]!

Yesterday, the three of us went to our filming location and shot some pre-vis of the scene ahead of our actual shoot tomorrow. Since we’re only shooting one scene, we have the luxury of dedicating a lot of time towards prepping it!

Back in college, More Than Enough was a sketch comedy group making weekly videos. Take a trip down memory lane with us…

Today, we’re revisiting our sketch Birthday Slaps:

This sketch came a few months after first starting, and it really felt like an “aha” moment for us in terms of finding our voice as a group.

Before Birthday Slaps, we’d made a few videos following a standard “three guys arguing about something” formula, and felt pretty dissatisfied with them. We realized we were laughing a lot more at the idea of characters “buying in” (aka Eli going along with the birthday slaps tradition) than resisting, and that we could get a lot more mileage out of actually doing things than just talking. Seems simple now, but look at us! We were young!

Stray observations:

• Eli edited this video, and I’m always impressed at the sound effects and digital lighting he put on the torture parts.

• The voice of the 911 operator is Eli’s dad, but their voices sound so similar that people always think we just got lazy and had Eli do the voice.

• Did I mention how young we look…?

Physical media haul 💿

As lovers of physical media, it’s a huge dream of ours to put out a DVD of our own one day. In the meantime, all we can do is stock up on our own physical 💿 collections. Here are some recent acquisitions we’ve made:

GABE:

I consider myself a modest but mighty collector of physical media. My latest purchases nicely illustrate my collection's multifaceted purpose:

• Godzilla Minus One: a favorite of mine that I want a token of (plus some sick bonus features)

• Disclosure Day: the latest from one of my favorite filmmakers, whose entire filmography I want to own

• Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair: a fun boutique purchase that tickled my fancy and spiced up the collection

ELI:

My favorite movie Little Shop of Horrors (1986) just got released on 4k. Seeing the directors cut ending with all the puppetry and miniatures in such high quality brings me immense joy. I additionally had to grab the original Little Shop (1960) on DVD to round out the collection. Jack Nicholson’s performance is a must see in the original, and it’s especially fun to compare it to Bill Murray’s performance of the same character in the 1986 version.

XUN:

I bought a CD player a couple months back, and I’ve been slowly trying to collect all my favorite albums. I recently made a huge come-up with these four heavy hitters:

• Savage Mode II by 21 Savage & Metro Boomin, one of my all-time favorite trap albums. The narration from Morgan Freeman really pushes this one over the edge.

• American IV by Johnny Cash. This mix on this album sounds so enormous, despite the fact that the production is so stripped-back.

• Take Off Your Pants and Jacket by Blink 182. This album makes suburban angst seem so romantic that I actually wish I was grounded right now.

• Love is such a trip for a Beatles superfan. One of my favorite moments is the strings from Goodnight bridging Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and Octopus’s Garden.
